Learn about and experience the evolution of African American oral traditions at the “April Folks” edition of The Lyricist LIVE next Wednesday in downtown #Jax. Lyricist Live is a freestyle, open mic “cypher,” a gathering central to Hip Hip culture. Freestyle artist Mal Jones created Lyricist Live eight years ago based on his experiences growing up in the Bronx in the 1980s and taking part in park jams where Hip Hop emerged. Jones later served as a Master Artist in the Folklife Apprenticeship Program twice, performed at the Florida Folk Festival, took freestyle to England as a Jacksonville Cultural Ambassador and has used it to promote literacy and improvisation skills among the city’s youth.
